Program Description:

Tend it well and it’ll always be there!

These are the words to one of our favourite fire songs. At GOS, we know that kids love being firekeepers. They want to light it up and they want to add the wood themselves. They want to help.  Like adults, they are captivated my the flames and coals, and they soak in the kind of connection that happens around a fire.

The Fire Keeper day session is about preparing kids for a joyful winter and staying warm. It is about orienting children to the tools, the practices and the etiquette of fire tending - so that kids can feel like a help and not a hindrance when it’s time to gather with family and friends around a fire. While Fire Keeper is full of classic GOS games and adventure, we’ll also take time to:

• Sing our favourite fire songs as we light the first one in the morning

• Tell our favourite fire stories (with practical advice baked right in)

• Review where to find the good tinder, and how to collect the right wood

• Practice fire-making skills: knowing the tools, the safety agreements, the principles, and etiquette of fire tending.

As with all GOS program - this session is hands-on. GOS instructors provide demonstrations and coaching so that young people can practice at tending their own fires with their friends.  With the main fire burning all day long, we’ve got lots of room for trial and error, failures and successes.

Fire Keeper is designed to support kids in feeling capable, helpful and connected when it comes to fire tending, weather it’s in the backyard, or back-country.
