On The Wing #2 | Departure: Raptors, Sparrows and Other Songbirds

  • The Guelph Outdoor School 733 Stone Road East Guelph, ON, N1E 3J3 Canada (map)

On The Wing is a series of three autumn birding workshops tracking the journey of the great southward migration. In each session, we’ll take a deep dive into groups of birds such as warblers, hawks and other raptors, sparrows, and waterfowl.  Some of these winged friends utilise the landscape around Guelph as a valuable migration stopover habitat, while others may arrive here to spend the winter from their breeding grounds in the great boreal forest or the arctic.

Learn how to see local microhabitats on the edge of our city from a bird's perspective. Under the wing of ornithologist Matt Iles and Aisa Saho, you can expect to share tools for listening to bird language, ID tips and tricks, and will have a chance to jam on all things feathered (yes, even dinosaurs).

On The Wing is birding à la Guelph Outdoor School: a time for connection to the land, ecology, and each other. This is birding rooted in curiosity, awareness, and inclusivity; designed for the absolute beginner to the fully-fledged bird-nerd.  Just as much about the season as the landscape; as much about connecting with yourself and others, as it is about knowing the stats on each species.

Whether you are just starting to look at birds or have already fallen in love, On The Wing is a chance to connect with others that share a passion that is taking flight. Sign up for all three sessions, or drop in for one.

Dress for the weather, with sturdy footwear for a bit of a hike. Bring a snack, a lunch, a hot beverage and a mask.
