A day of emergent connection to birds and the land. Learn how to see neighbourhood habitats from a bird's perspective. Hike and explore with GOS staff as they ask questions that bring you closer into the lives and habits of the spring migrating birds. Whether you are just starting to look at birds or have already fallen in love, On the Wing is a chance to connect with others that share a budding passion.
Meandering through different micro habitats along the Eramosa River, we will discuss topics including: the scale of migration, familiar common residents, early signs of breeding, and how different species utilize the landscape around us as a valuable stopover habitat. Under the wing of ornithologist Matt Iles and bird nerd Dev Ridge, you can expect them to share tools for listening to bird language, ID tips and tricks, and their enthusiasm for winged beings.
Come join us and experience the spring surge for yourself! On the Wing is birding à la Guelph Outdoor School - rooted in curiosity, awareness, and inclusivity. Every feather found is a tracking mystery waiting to be unraveled. Just as much about the season as the landscape. Just as much about connecting with yourself and others as it is about knowing the stats on each bird. This workshop is an easy venue for maintaining social distance. Dress for the weather, with sturdy footwear for a bit of a hike. Bring a snack, a lunch, a hot beverage and a mask.
