Sing From Your Roots | Adult Workshop

  • The Guelph Outdoor School 733 Stone Road East Guelph, ON, N1E 3J3 Canada (map)

Singing together is a fun and healing source of connection that has a ubiquitous presence in all human cultures. We sing songs to mark transitions, to mourn, to celebrate and to connect. In their quest to follow the trail of ancestral wisdom, musicians Brooke Fry and Carolyn Ross have been attracted to melodies that hail from the lands of their ancestors. By tapping into the roots of these songs, and singing them together, we can come into greater integrity with our lineages and experience more connection and healing for ourselves and the communities to which we belong.

Session price: $70 +HST. If cost is a barrier, please see our Economics for a Changing World page for sliding-scale and mutual aid options.

Together, Brooke and Carolyn have over a decade of experience sharing song in community. In this workshop, we'll teach songs that are simple to learn, and often through call and response. We will sing old folk songs with Celtic and French origins and songs we have written for the purpose of community singing, as well as some of the songs that we love to sing on a regular basis at GOS. We will also invite participants to share songs from their own cultural backgrounds, if they feel called. You will get the opportunity to attune to the wordless music of the natural world, and will come away from the workshop with new songs that you can share with others. While singing can feel intimidating to some, we aim to meet you in your comfort zone and support you in finding your voice.

Sing From Your Roots is led by gifted singers and songcatchers Brooke Fry and Carolyn Ross. This workshop takes place at GOS’ Stone Road site.
